High Point is where John Coltrane grew up. His family moved here when he was three months old, and in 1939 he joined a community band, starting on alto horn before moving to clarinet. A statue of him now stands downtown, and the High Point Arts Council, serving the city since 1962, runs a John Coltrane Jazz Workshop for students and the free SummerSounds concert series. Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, a Guilford County Schools magnet school for middle and high school students, offers orchestra among its arts programs.
