Play and learn

Around the circle

The circle of fifths is the map that connects every key in music. In this game a key appears and you answer a question about it: how many sharps or flats it has, its relative key, or the neighboring key a fifth away. Play a round, build a streak, and learn the relationships that make every key feel like home.

Why the circle of fifths matters

The circle of fifths is a simple picture that shows how every major and minor key is related. Each step clockwise adds one sharp, each step the other way adds one flat, and every major key shares its signature with a relative minor. A young musician who knows these connections can look at a key signature and already feel oriented in the piece, because the pattern is the same all the way around.

Understanding these relationships also makes transposing easier, helps a player recognize chord progressions by ear, and gives structure to the otherwise long list of keys. This game starts with the friendliest keys and their sharp or flat counts, then adds relative keys and the fifth-up and fifth-down neighbors as you grow more confident.

How this game helps

Short, playful rounds build the same quick recall a confident musician relies on. The streak scoring rewards a run of correct answers, and the gentle feedback shows the right answer whenever you miss one, so every question teaches something. It makes a joyful warm up before a Suzuki violin lesson or a home practice session.
